Harry & Gary today reached their latest milestone clocking up 700 caches each. The lucky cache was mongooses K2 in Saddleworth. They'd attempted it for their 500th & 600th but both times the final had gone missing. This time they made sure Tony had the cache in place before going for another long hike up the hill to get it. The long hike was the easy bit. The hard work had been done long ago on the K2 cache, keeping 4 wheels on their Astra Vectra as they drove round Oldham to find the first stages in parks. So 800 beckons. I'll just say now that when you get past 1000, you only get congrats every 500! Well done again & thanks for never resorting to one liner logs Additional by the editor: Harry, also submitted a news item at the same time, so I've added half of his to this one. January 7 by astra-nomical (704 found) My 700th cache I'd tried to find this cache for my 500th find but failed, then again for my 600th find and failed but only because the cache had gone missing. Thanks to Mongoose39uk for replacing the cache which meant I was able to bag this for my 700th on a joint caching trip with Overanout. At least I've seen the changing of the seasons at the top of K2, from a warm evening in October to bitterly cold frozen ladscape in November to driving rain and mist today. TVMFTC I've enjoyed it, but I'm glad it's over! Left: Generic 2007 Geocoin SL January 7 by overanout (706 found) The winter is beginning to set in now and this third attempt at conquering the infamous K2 would probably be our last chance before next spring. We set off from base camp Astra. The weather was clear, but very dull and grey and the temperature was hovering around zero degrees. Astra-nomical had his thermal long-johns on underneath his all-weather kit, and who could blame him. Had we been brass monkeys, we would have lost some bits up on this mountain. We had already decided to attack the summit via the eastern ridge. A route we had tried on our second attempt and which we were now very familiar. However, we did not account for the track turning into a torrent of water cascading down the mountain from the ice fields at higher altitude. Undeterred we carried on, and after what seemed like an eternity we eventually reached the summit. We could see the storm clouds gathering in the distance, so we prepared ourselves for the final push. Luck must have been on our side as we located the cache quickly and signed the log before making our descent back to base camp Astra. On the return leg we were caught in a rain shower which also included hailstones. This only served to spur us on and by the time we reached base camp Astra the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to peek out between the clouds….typical! At long last we had conquered K2…we had reached our 700th cache find and what an adventure this has been. I would recommend anyone to attempt this cache. It is not that difficult… honest! Or is it? Took – the Geocoin that Astra-nomical had dropped in. TFTC SL OVERANOUT
